Heal your Soul: Palo Santo and its benefits
Welcome to our blog: Heal your Soul, where we will focus on a specific topic or product and explain the benefits and how they can provide healing and promote positivity in your life. This week the product we will be focusing on is Palo Santo.
Palo Santo (Bursera Graveolens) has a long history of use by the native people of South America as an essential tool in sacred shamanic rituals for its energetic cleansing and medicinal healing properties.
The mystical tree is part of the citrus family and has sweet notes of pine, mint and lemon. The calming and relaxing aroma of Palo Santo is even more present from the smoke of the smouldering wood. Today it is continued to be enjoyed for its cleansing and healing properties, much like sage, to release negative energies and negative thoughts and feelings. The smoke provides an uplifting scent that calms the mind and raises your vibration in preparation for meditation and provides a deeper spiritual connection.
Palo santo is one of the most fragrant woods in the world. Its sweet scent of pine, mint, and lemon has, for centuries, been a harbinger of healing and good fortune. Shamans, saints, and those seeking a stronger spiritual connection with the world use palo santo to protect, experience, and heal.
Burn palo santo sticks or use the charcoal for ritual smudging that will welcome creativity, love, and good fortune into your space. The wood can help brighten energy and promote feelings of positivity and joy. The scent is also shown to reduce stress and anxiety, and enhance clarity and concentration.
If meditation is the yin, palo santo is the yang. The uplifting scent is the perfect partner for your meditation practice. Raise your vibration, and discover peace and groundedness as you sink into a deeper connection to the Earth and your inner consciousness.
Palo santo is used to treat a wide variety of physical ailments including colds, cases of flu, anxiety, depression, asthma, bronchitis, headaches, and emotional trauma. Use the oil to provide pain relief for arthritis and joint pain with its anti-inflammatory properties.
Palo santo tea (made by simmering the wood in hot water) acts as a natural digestive aid. The oil can be added to soaps, scrubs, and lotions to cleanse and moisturize the skin. The wood also contains high concentrations of a compound called d-limonene, which is thought to aid in the prevention of a variety of cancers.
When used for smudging or burning, palo santo can eliminate negative energy, creating a calmer, more tranquil space. Set an intention about what you want to clear out of your space, then move from corner to corner, removing any bad energy, uplifting your spirit, and filling your home with good fortune.
Palo santo can also be used alongside White sage, I would say they are the perfect dynamic duo when it comes to cleansing and smudging rituals, check out our white sage blog, where we go into all the details on how to perform a smudging ceremony - you can use palo santo in the same way you use white sage. I would recommend using the white sage and following it up with the palo santo directly afterwards.
You can also use various types of crystals during smudging ceremonies to enhance the benefits of the cleansing. We sell many types of Palo santo bundles and smudge kits which also include crystals - check out our Smudge kits and Palo Santo Bundles here. We have an entire cleansing and ritual section which includes many different types of smudge kits and items for cleansing including Palo Santo.
